Jackpine Wetland Interpretive Trail

Come explore the new wetland trail!

Where is it?

Located just north of Jackpine Flats, this new trail showcases a beautiful natural wetland – one of the few in the area!

Driving from Terrace along Old Lakelse Lake Drive, the parking lot is located on the left side of the road just after crossing the Sockeye Creek bridge.

Phase 1 - Trail progress

Phase 1 of this trail project was completed in January 2024, which includes:

  • The parking lot and road tie-in to Old Lakelse Lake Drive

  • The first 500 m of gravel trail to just past the viewpoint

  • The installation of the trailhead kiosk, and a picnic table and interpretive sign at the lookout

In the spring of 2024, more interpretive signs will be added along the Phase 1 trail section.

Phase 2 - Boardwalk plans

Phase 2 of this trail project will begin in Spring/Summer of 2024. We will be extending the existing trail into the wetland portion at the southwest edge, and will be installing a boardwalk across the end portion of the wetland. This section will also include at least one interpretive sign.

Phase 3 - Trail plans

Phase 3 of this trail project will begin in Spring/Summer of 2025, and will consist of building the final stretch, connecting the existing trails into a loop. This section will weave through a mix of second growth and old growth forest, immersing the trail in a rich forest ecosystem.

Help us keep this trail in great condition!

A few reminders for enjoying this new trail:

  • No Motorized Vehicles, Horses, or Bicycles. Walking trail only – The gravel surface of the trail is intended for foot traffic only. Please leave bikes, horses, and motorized vehicles at home as they will damage the trail surface. There are other trails for these recreational uses!

  • Dogs on-leash – If you bring a furry friend with you, please consider keeping them on-leash. This is a natural wetland that is home to many species of birds, amphibians, mammals, and fish that don’t want to be friends with Fido. Please also keep the trail clean by picking up any pet waste.

  • No fires – While the picnic table is there for an enjoyable rest stop or maybe even a family picnic, the viewpoint is not a campsite. Please do not have fires as they leave a scar on the ground and taking wood from the area is damaging to the ecosystem.

  • Pack in, Pack out – Please help us keep this trail in its pristine condition and remember to pack out any garbage with you when you leave.

Thank you for your help and we hope you enjoy the beautiful area!
